List of best Indian cinema. Esko nai dekha to kya khaak dekha.

Have you ever thought that how would you ever know what is best if you have never seen or experienced it? One of my very dear friend told me that she watches movies which she likes, unlike me who pays attention to details and technicalities of it. The fact is I don’t. The only difference is I have seen good cinema, I have experienced the best.. so now when I see movies like what ‘Bollywood’ generally makes I can clearly see how horrible it is. If I may give an example: Say you love drinking whisky and your fav.brand is RC but once in a while you do enjoy Teachers and boast about it to your friends. You think that’s the best there can be coz you don’t even know there are much better brands available like Bowmore or Isle of Jura.

I’ve made a small list of best Indian movies that one must watch. I’ll stick to Indian movies otherwise Iranian, Japanese and French films will fill this list. 🙂

Here are some of the best of Indian Cinema one must see:

Satyajit Ray films: Pather Panchali, Apu Trilogy, Gupi Gayan Bagha Bayen and Charulata are must watch. However I don’t think that there’s even one movie of Satyajit Ray that one can afford to miss.

Mrinaal Sen: Ek din protidin (And quite rolls the dawn), Aakaler Anushondhae (In search of famine) are one of his best.. however just like Ray even every movie of Sen is a masterpiece.

Ritwik Ghatak: Ghatak completes the genius bong trio with Ray and Sen. They created a benchmark consistantly with every movie they made. Once or twice is a stroke of luck but consistantly creating masterpiece with each movie takes a genius. Watch the Meghe Dhaka Taara, Titash, ek nodir naam etc

Ritwik Ghatak Titash

Shyam Benegal: Well done Abba, Bhumika and Kalyug are one of his best but try to watch all his movies.

Nayakan:  Mani Ratnam lives up to his name.. he is indeed a jewel in Indian cinema. Not just Nayakan but any of his films are proof of that.

Elippathayam The rat trap: Story telling at it’s best. It is a Malayalam film, written and directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. It is critically considered by many to be one of the most outstanding pieces in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s filmography.

Duvidha by Mani Kaul: You can also watch other movies of Mani, needless to say they are amazing.

A peck in the cheek: Another genius by Mani Ratnam.

Do beegha zameen:  A timeless masterpiece

Aandhi: Undoubtably one of the most controversial and best movies Indian cinema has ever seen. It’s genius of Gulzar that has pulled it off. Gulzar had made some best movies in Indian cinema. Koshish, Khushboo, Kinaara, Ijaazat, Mausam, Mirza Ghalib, Libaas, Parichay (Parichay can easily be called ‘Sound of Music of Bollywood). Must watch all.

Maasom: I’ve never seen a better child psychology movie (among Indian movies) a genius of Shekhar Kapoor.

Govind Nilhani: Ardh Satya and Aakrosh

Aakrosh Ardh Satya

Aparna Sen: 36 Chourangi Lane and The Japanese Wife, can a movie gets any better than this. With Japanese wife Aparna Sen brought back those days of acting with expression of your eyes. Must also watch Mr and Mrs Iyer, Sati, Paroma, Iti Mrinalini.

Harishchandrachi Factory.

Salaam Bombay and The Namesake: Mira Nair, well what can I say about her.. just watch every movie she made specially Monsoon Wedding,

The Namesakesalaam bombay

Anurag Kayshap: These five movies are the best ever Gulaal, Paanch, Black Friday, Udaan and Dev D. Honorary mention The girl in Yellow boots.

Barfii: A genius from Anurag Basu, each scene of this movie is like a poem.  You know how if one likes a film he or she writes a blog about it, well I can write a blog about each scene of this movie. Do watch Life in a Metro as well.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshi: This movie shows today’s directors how to make a movie. It’s a masterpiece. Finest work of Dibakar Banerjee. Do watch Khosla Ka Ghosla as well.

Aankhon Dekhi is last but not the least one of the best works of my fav director Rajat Kapoor. This is Sanjay Mishra’s best work so far after Phas gaye re Obama. Don’t miss it.

Aankhon Dekhi

Hirishikesh Mukherjee movies.. all of them. Must watch. “Apna kaam to har koi karta hai, par badi maa dusron ka kaam karne mein jo mazaa hai…” Baawarchi, Chupke Chupke, Golmaal, Aanand and unending list of genius.

Madras Cafe: One of the best political espionage film based on the assassination of ex-PM of India Late Mr. Rajeev Gandhi. This is brilliantly crafted movie and what impressed me more that it was produced by John who plays the lead.

Vishal Bhardwaj: Except one or two all his films would make up to this list.. specially Omkara, Maqbool, 7 Khoon Maaf, Haidar, Kamine, The Blue Umbrella and Makdi. I remember when Pankaj Kapoor was nominated for The Blue Umbrella he was put in category of “best Villian” but he was not a villain in that movie but was a gray character. He also mentioned that while receiving the award that it’s not a villainous character. Alas Indian film awards if only they understood anything about cinema.

Note: There are lots of other films that I have failed to mention here either coz I have not seen them or I don’t remember right now. Please don’t be offended. I know there are outstanding movies in Malayalam, Tamil, Telegu and Kannada also Marathi Gujrati and other languages too. If you know any please feel free to drop names in the comment. I shall watch it obviously and would love to include that in my list. This is the list of best movies according to me. You may or may not agree with me but the movies that are mentioned here are must watch. If you didn’t see these movies.. please don’t talk about movies to me.

Thank you. 🙂
