Are you really spiritual? Or you love to think so. Religion Vs Spirituality.

creation2-300x237Most of the people you talk to will tell you that they are very spiritual. When you ask them what do they mean by being spiritual, often the answer would be… “Well I am devoted to God,” or “I worship to God every day,” “I go to temple/Church or other religious institutions regularly,” etc.

Spirituality is very often confused with being religious.

I am not making any comment on anyone’s religion here, nor I have any intention of hurting anyone’s sentiments. I am merely sharing what have I understood about spirituality. I would like to share few basic point which are of course just the tip of the iceberg.

First of all there are no rules.

There are no set of doctrine to follow, there are no rigid and fixed chores for the day, spirituality simply lets you follow your heart, it encourages you to listen to your intuition and do what is right for yourself and others around you. It truly sets you free to be the best you can be and to be a good person with no promise of punishment or reward. The reward is simply your own inner happiness.

It is only based on love.

If you hate or dislike or have prejudice against anyone based on color, religion, cast, race, language, social status, looks or anything else which makes them even tiny bit different then you are.. then you are definitely not spiritual. Spirituality encourages you to focus all of your energy only on the good, and to act only based on love.

They tell you what to believe while Spirituality lets you discover it yourself.

As opposed to telling you in black and white how the universe was created and why we are here Spirituality lets you discover these questions and answers for yourself. It empowers you to find your own truth in all things and sets no limits to how deep you can go in understanding all there is to know.

They separate, Spirituality unites.

Through our world there are many religions and they all preach that their story is the right story. Spirituality sees the truth in all of them and unites them because the truth is same for all of us despite our differences and uniqueness. It focuses on the quality of the divine message they share and not on the differences in details of the story they speak.

The difference with Karma and Punishment.

From the very beginning, since the time they organized the culture of controlling people in the name of various religions they created two things,

1st. Create indifference amongst each other

2nd. Keep them scared of breaking the rules. (The rules which are made for you not to see the truth)

Instead of talking about punishment or the threat of hell Spirituality only talks about Karma. It’s the Law of Attraction, you get what you give. Simple.

Forgiveness and letting go.

One can’t be spiritual if one doesn’t learn to forgive. You have your cup full so nothing new can enter it. The set of rules, your ego and false pride blinds you to see the fact that you are in fact only hurting yourself by seeking revenge or hurting others. The damage you think you cause to others is insignificant in comparison to what you cause to yourself in the process.

Forgiveness is for yourself, for your betterment and for your mental peace. By not forgiving you are making them important and empowering them in your mind to torment you more every day. Just let go of it. Rise above all that.

Walk your own path.

Instead of ancients stories about angels and Gods, spirituality encourages you to make your own path and create your own stories. This sets you on a journey of enlightenment and self-discovery to which the only limits can be set by yourself. It encourages you to trust your heart and follow it wherever it may lead you.

Even if we talk about religion or God, I believe every religious book or God tells you to love one another, live in harmony and share. Do we do that? Except that we do everything else, hate each other, each others culture, value, food etc. Then why are we pretending to be God loving. Aren’t we hypocrites. We just love, believe and worship him if it suits us in certain ways.

Spirituality reminds us that we are not separate, there are no borders, no races and no cultural divides. All that is true is that we are all one and the only constant is Love.

Peace!

  1. Wonderful article and beautifully written. Too many times I’ve heard people equate ‘Spirituality’ to ‘Religion’… although they are clearly different things entirely. One of my favorite quotes is from Deepak Chopra… “Religion is belief in someone else’s experience. Spirituality is having your own experience. “
